The impact of injury is tremendous in terms of morbidity, mortality, personal costs and economic
costs. Injuries cost Canadians more than $14.7 billion per year. In 1999, preventable injuries
cost Ontarians $5 billion.
The burden of injuries on our economy and on the population at large is immense in Ontario and nationwide. Although injuries can be the result of various causes including motor vehicle collisions, falls, scalds, burns, drowning, poisoning, suffocation, violence and suicide, they all have one thing in common: they are preventable.
